Lincoln
County North Carolina. Lincolnton is the second oldest town
west of the Catawba River. It is bounded by Mecklenburg, Gaston,
Cleveland, Catawba and Iredell counties. Lincoln County was named
for General Benjamin Lincoln of Rhode Island, commander of the Southern
armies during the Revolutionary War.
Lincoln county incorporated in 1779 and the city of Lincolnton
incorporated in 1786. In 1785, the State of North Carolina granted
to Joseph Dixon, in trust for the citizens of Lincoln County, 300
acres of land on which to build the town of Lincolnton.
In 1868, the General Assembly enacted a law that would divide counties
into townships. The first Board of County Commissioners divided
Lincoln County into eight townships. In 1872, the number was reduced
to five - Catawba Springs, Ironton, Union, Lincolnton, and North
Brook. They are the present townships. Approximately 309 square
miles in size, Lincoln County boast a population 67,851 with a medium
age of 36, according to 2003 demographics.
